As we age, our skin loses moisture and firmness. We start to look as old as our chronological age. At the office of Dr. Wendy E. Roberts, MD in Rancho Mirage, CA, we believe everyone should be confident in their own skin. Today, we’re discussing everything you need to know about Juvederm Voluma, so you can rejuvenate your skin and subtly restore volume to your cheeks.
How Does Juvederm Voluma Work?
Juvederm Voluma is a hyaluronic acid, or HA, injectable filler. The static signs of aging are most often caused by a deficiency in hyaluronic acid. Therefore, Juvederm works by correcting this deficiency. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in between your cells. In the case of skin cells, adequate HA levels give your skin a firm, youthful appearance.
How Is Juvederm Voluma XC Different?
Versus Other Injectables
Juvederm Voluma XC differs from other gel-like injectables in that it is specifically designed to make the cheeks appear more plump and youthful. Similarly, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC and Juvederm Ultra XC are used to target thin lips, laugh lines and deep lines around the nose and mouth.
Botox is on the opposite end of the injectable spectrum. While HA fillers are most often used to treat the static signs of aging, Botox is designed to treat the “active” signs of aging. It works by reducing activity in hyperactive areas of the face to smooth wrinkles.
Juvederm Voluma XC is the only hyaluronic acid filler to be FDA-approved to treat the cheeks. With optimal treatment, volume is added instantly and results can last up to two years. In under an hour, you can shave years off your face.
Versus Fat Grafting
Also known as facial fat injection or fat transplantation, fat grafting is a fairly common alternative to dermal fillers. This process involves removing fat from one region of your body, like your lower buttocks or inner thighs, and placing it in another. When injected into your cheeks, your countenance becomes fuller and more youthful.
Unfortunately, there’s a pretty significant problem with fat grafting. There’s no way to know how much of the injected fat cells will be absorbed by the body. Moreover, there’s no way to predict how many of the transferred fat cells will die after injection. With Juvederm, trouble areas can be accurately targeted for a smooth, even, full appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does the Injection Hurt?
Some of us want to look years younger but are afraid that injections will be painful. Any Juvederm product ending in “XC”, such as Juvederm Ultra Plus XC or Juvederm Vollure XC, includes lidocaine to ensure your treatment session is comfortable. If you’re still worried about discomfort or pain, ask about a topical numbing agent so you can’t feel the injection site.
2. How Long Does the Treatment Session Last?
Before your first treatment, you’ll need to invest time in an initial consultation to walk you through what to expect. We welcome the opportunity to answer all questions you have about this treatment and discuss your goals and what alternatives may be better suited for you. The treatment session itself is usually over in under half an hour. We will massage the treatment area to ensure the HA is distributed evenly. Then, you are free to go home and enjoy the beautiful results.
3. Am I a Good Candidate?
Since hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, nearly everyone is a good candidate for Juvederm Voluma XC treatment. During your initial consultation, we will assess your unique condition and help you determine if this is the right treatment for you. You may be a good candidate for this treatment if you wish to enhance the contour of your face by restoring volume to your cheeks.
4. How Many Injections Will I Need?
How many injections you will need depends on your unique condition. While some clients receive six injections on their first visit, most only require one to two injections. We recommend you come in 10 to 14 days after your initial treatment so we can evaluate the improvement. If you’re not quite satisfied by the increase in volume, you can have a small follow-up injection to further enhance the results.
5. What If I Don’t Like It?
Juvederm Voluma XC lasts between 18 months to two years. However, if you’re not satisfied with your results, you’re not stuck with them for a year-and-a-half. Hyaluronic acid is dissolvable through the use of the injectable enzyme, hyaluronidase. Keep in mind, however, it takes slightly longer for Juvederm to dissolve than Restylane because Juvederm is far more robust and durable.
6. Can I Use Other Fillers, Too?
Juvederm Voluma XC does not affect your ability to use other facial fillers. For example, in addition to this treatment, Sculptra can be used to shape the rest of your face.
7. Do I Need a Liquid Facelift?
A liquid facelift can turn back the clock by 10, 15 or even 20 years. Depending on how much of your face needs to be “lifted”, you may need two to three treatment sessions to achieve your desired results. However, improvement is seen after the first session. Among the dermal fillers Dr. Roberts may use to enhance the contour of your face are Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, Perlane, and Juvederm.
