Many Rancho Mirage residents are discovering how Botox® works to prevent facial wrinkles that can make you look older than your actual age. Although most people have heard of this treatment, there are still a few misconceptions about it, and you may have some questions. What is Botox®? How does it work? Would I make a good candidate for this treatment?
What Is Botox®?
Botox® is a type of liquid that we inject to reduce the activity of certain facial muscles that cause what are known as “dynamic wrinkles.” Some typical treatment applications are for forehead lines, crow’s feet, and lines found between the eyebrows. Injections are not normally delivered around the mouth area due to concerns about proper eating and speaking.
Besides its cosmetic uses, injections can be used to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. It can also be used to treat or prevent migraine headaches.
Is Botox® Anything Like Injectable Fillers?
Other than the delivery via injection and anti-aging applications, the two treatments are very different. Injectable fillers enhance facial volume to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, while Botox® works by temporarily relaxing facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles.
How Does It Work?
Botox® works as a type of nerve block to prevent the transmission of messages from the brain to the treated muscle. Since the treated muscle cannot receive a nerve transmission to contract, it will no longer form a dynamic wrinkle at the site of the injection.
How Is It Made?
Botox® consist of a purified protein solution that is formulated in a laboratory under extremely strict and controlled conditions. The product has an excellent safety profile and has been used for decades for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Lower costs have made it available to the general public in recent years.
What Are the Results?
You may notice the first effects of your treatment within 72 hours, but up to a week may be necessary to obtain maximum effects. Some patients are asked to return after their first injections for an assessment of their response.
Patients typically find that the results of their injections last up to four months. Patients typically have a number of treatment sessions during their first year and fewer times after that. Once your muscles have become relaxed, less is needed for the maintenance of results.
